This piece is named after the iconic 1980 book by historian Howard Zinn “A Peoples History of the United States” which I first read in high school thanks to a cool history teacher. This book tells America’s story from the point of view of — and in the words of — America’s women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers. Those whose voices have been silenced and whose struggles have been largely omitted from most history books. I appreciate this book for its enduring insights into the birth, development, and destiny of our nation.
I am interested in art that upholds humanitarian principals especially for the innocent and most vulnerable in society. The artist Ai Weiwei has said “my art is like a voice to me, when I use it can be a song or it can be a lament “ I often think about this while working in the studio. Explicitly I wish to make work that is a path with heart that leads to greater tolerance and peace around the world.
Art is revolution and collecting art is a powerful way to add beauty, meaning and inspiration to one’s life. It can happen at any budget level and payment over multiple installments is always an option, it’s how I collect art myself!
